CILIP’s New Professioanls Info Day has been running for a few years and is designed to engage and encourage recent additions to the profession. This year’s offering consisted of a guest speaker, followed by sessions on getting involved professionally, getting involved internationally, C.V. and Interviews skills, and getting a job.
I found the day a bit of a mix, with some sessions being really helpful, while others didn’t offer much in the way of new information. The interview and C.V. tips were particularly useful, especially at the stage I am at now where I am trying to update my C.V. with skills I’ve learnt since starting my traineeship.
Perhaps a problem with offering an ‘Info Day’ for a group of young library employees is that they are already pretty savvy with using the internet to find the information they need. It would have been nice to have been offered some insider knowledge of some sort, just by hearing the experiences of librarians from different sectors. It was, however, really nice to meet other people who are currently Graduate Trainees, studying Library and Information Science, or taking different paths into the profession. Hopefully I will see a few friendly faces when I start at UCL in September.
